Reasoning agents

Reasoning agents versus rules-based workflows

Predictable steps and ambiguous decisions require different execution models. Most enterprise processes need both.

Fynite editorial guide · Illustrative patterns, not deployment documentation.

01

Where workflows fit

Use deterministic steps when inputs, conditions and expected actions are known: required-field checks, threshold routing and scheduled record updates.

02

Where reasoning fits

Use bounded reasoning when context is incomplete, evidence conflicts, or the next permitted action depends on investigation. Require a summary that cites evidence rather than hidden model chain-of-thought.

03

Combine the models

A supplier workflow can validate mandatory documents, invoke an investigation when records disagree, and return to a deterministic approval rule. A human authorizes exceptions.

04

Evaluate both paths

Test ordinary cases, missing information, conflicting records and unauthorized actions. The model must escalate when context or authority is insufficient.

Application

Capture supplier documents and the business request.

Illustrative vendor onboarding model. Enterprise processes can combine both approaches.

Buyer review checklist

  • Predictable checks remain explicit rules
  • Ambiguous decisions have evidence requirements
  • Sensitive actions require authorization
  • Insufficient context leads to escalation
